Queueing Models Analytical Solutions and Solutions by Simulation

چکیده
Simple queueing systems are presented as candidates for solution by both analytical and simulation methods. The limitations of the analytical approach are contrasted with the stochastic nature of a simulation solution. A sequence of problems leads from a model which is easily solved analytically to a model which is not amenable to an analytical solution. Simulation output for each problem is compared with known analytical results to disclose some of the pitfalls associated with solutions by simulation. 1. QUEUEING SYSTEMS. A queueing system is a system where entities arrive according to some arrival pattern, stay in the system until a certain set of services have been provided, and then depart. In an open system, entities come from an external calling population and return to that calling population on departure. In a closed system, entities always remain in the system and return periodically for services. We will restrict our attention to open systems in this discussion. Figure 1 below illustrates such a system.

Q: A New Performance Analysis Tool Exploiting Numerical Transform Inversion
We describe a new tool that we are developing to help analyze the performance of emerging telecommunication systems. These emerging systems include ATM, broadband, intelligent and wireless networks, each of which will support a wide variety of services and media. Our tool is distinguished from previous tools by exploiting numerical transform inversion. In this paper we describe three modules in...
متن کاملTwo Analytical Models for Evaluating Performance of Gigabit Ethernet Hosts with Finite Buffer
Two analytical models are developed to study the impact of interrupt overhead on operating system performance of network hosts with limited-size or finite buffer. Under heavy network traffic such as that of Gigabit Ethernet, the system performance will be negatively affected due to interrupt overhead caused by incoming traffic. In particular, packet loss, excessive latency and significant degra...
متن کاملEvaluation of Pareto/d/1/k Queue by Simulation
The finding that Pareto distributions are adequate to model Internet packet interarrival times has motivated the proposal of methods to evaluate steady-state performance measures of Pareto/D/1/k queues. Some limited analytical derivation for queue models has been proposed in the literature, but their solutions are often of a great mathematical challenge. To overcome such limitations, simulation...
متن کاملOptimal design of supply chain network under uncertainty environment using hybrid analytical and simulation modeling approach
Models that aim to optimize the design of supply chain networks have gained more interest in the supply chain literature. Mixed-integer linear programming and discrete-event simulation are widely used for such an optimization problem. We present a hybrid approach to support decisions for supply chain network design using a combination of analytical and discrete-event simulation models. The prop...
متن کاملHydraulic fracture propagation: analytical solutions versus Lattice simulations
In this work, we used a grain-based numerical model based on the concept of lattice. The modelling was done to simulate the lab experiments carried out on the mortar samples. Also the analytical solutions corresponding to the viscosity-dominated regime were used to estimate the fracture length and width, and the results obtained were compared with the numerical simulations. As the analytical so...
